Write for yourself/Salinger redux

Posted: February 8, 2010 in All, Prose

As it turns out, I really am just writing for myself. One of the only creative things I’ve done so far this year (because I’ve been sick) is a treatment for Transformers 3. There’s absolutely no reason for me to write this. It’s actually counterproductive. I won’t ever get it made. But I just did it because it was fun. And isn’t that what I’m supposed to be doing? Having fun? If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, then don’t do it. When 99% of your stuff goes unpublished, you might as well just write what makes you happy. It really is a hobby. Don’t think of it as a business. Or an art. And after all, you’re supposed to write the things you’d enjoy reading.

Kind of like how Salinger had been writing for decades without anyone reading it.

Steve Martin said “I believe entertainment can aspire to be art, and can become art, but if you set out to make art you’re an idiot.”
